Free Developmental Screenings & Evaluations for Young Children

If you have concerns about your child’s development, Child Find can help. Early identification leads to better outcomes—and services are free.

What Is Child Find?

Child Find is part of Colorado’s statewide system for identifying children who may have a developmental delay or educational disability.

Screenings look at how your child:

  • Plays and interacts

  • Learns

  • Communicates

  • Moves

  • Behaves

The early years of development are critical, and support is available when concerns arise.

Who Can Refer and Be Referred to Child Find?

  • Children ages 2 years, 9 months through 5 years

  • Children who are not yet in kindergarten

  • Referrals may come from parents, caregivers, doctors, or childcare providers

What Services Are Provided?

✔️ Free developmental screenings (ASQ-3, ASQ-SE, Observations, etc)
✔️ Free evaluations (if needed)
✔️ Special education & related services for eligible children

If a child qualifies:

  • Services are provided as Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)

  • An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is created

  • Services are delivered in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)

When Should I Call?

You may want to make a referral/ request a screening if you have concerns about your child’s:

  • Speech or language

  • Learning or problem-solving

  • Vision or hearing

  • Play or social skills

  • Movement or fine motor skills

  • Reactions to transitions or challenges

What Happens After a Child Find Referral is Made?

  1. Parent permission is obtained

  2. Developmental screenings (ASQ-3, ASQ-SE) and observations are completed

  3. Results are reviewed by the Child Find Team and discussed with the parent

  4. If further investigation is needed, a comprehensive evaluation would be recommended/ conducted with parents' permission

All services are provided at no cost to families.

The team always includes you, the parent, and may also include:

  • Child Find Coordinator

  • Early Childhood Special Educator

  • Speech/Language Pathologist

  • Occupational or Physical Therapist

  • Audiologist

  • School Nurse

  • Specialized teachers (vision/hearing)

Kindergarten–12th Grade Referrals

Referrals for students, Kindergarten through 12th grade, are made directly through the student’s school.  Parents may also contact the UNBOCES office at (970) 626-2977 for guidance.
