Paradox Valley School is looking for a passionate teacher who is interested in joining a dynamic team of educators dedicated to closing the achievement gap in a high-need, remotely located community of learners. This position will start by the 2018-2019 school year. PVS is a growing, small, high performing, rural, arts-focused Charter located in Montrose County ten miles from the Utah border. PVS is authorized by the West End School District RE-2 and located in the small town of Paradox, CO, which is nestled in the beautiful Paradox Valley; and, when combined with Bedrock, CO, our nearest town (5 miles), has ninety-nine names in the phone book.
Close to ninety percent of our students choose to attend our school, which means riding our bus for almost an hour each way. Students come from: Nucla and Naturita (35 and 30 miles away), the hometowns of the School District; and, Norwood (60 miles away) and Redvale (45 miles away), which represent the neighboring school district.
We are a remote, tight-knit school community looking for a special person, who loves driving through scenic county to do anything (including 30 miles to the nearest gas station)! Can you live where the nearest Starbucks is 55 miles away in the neighboring state (Utah); the nearest shopping mall and box stores are 120 miles away (2.5 hr. drive); and, the only traffic jam is twice a year when cattle are moved from one side of the valley to the other? If you are intrigued and like: remote open areas; clean air; beautiful high desert; red rock cliffs; hiking; biking; fishing; hunting; 4-wheeling; rivers; mountains; and, solitude, you might enjoy living in Paradox and teaching at PVS.
PVS started nineteen years ago with 18 students as a K-5 charter school in a three-classroom public school building built in 1954. Three wing additions, a $3M remodel, two modular classroom buildings, and a high school addition later, our enrollment is currently 95. PVS has always had multi-age classrooms (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12). Our Lead High School Teacher will be leaving at the end of the year to pursue other interests, therefore we are seeking a replacement.
We are an arts-focused school with: an award-winning bluegrass band; a large stage for productions; an art studio (including pottery and glass kilns); and, classes in painting, drawing, fiber arts, photography, and singing. Amid this opportunities, we weave strong academic curricula, which include: teacher-created, core-aligned lessons; Singapore Math through 8th grade; and, Every Child a Reader and Writer. We have fully integrated the Pyramid Model into our Preschool and early elementary grades, which blends with the Love & Logic method for promoting positive student behavior in the upper grades.
